It's easy to look at me now and see a very successful businessman, who lives well with his family on Long Island, enjoying motorcycles, cigars, and backyard barbecue... but it wasn't always this way for me or my family.
I struggled with debt and money problems in my early years, and growing up was no picnic either.
I was born and raised in Holtsville, NY and watched my mom and dad work their fingers to the bone just to feed us and keep a roof over our heads.
My poor father worked 3 jobs literally round the clock. He moved garbage at the town landfill. He was a night watchman on construction sites, and in the few spare hours he had left, he would drive around town collecting scrap metal from the streets which he would turn in for extra money.
Mom worked full time at the bank, and had a second full time job taking care of me, my siblings, and our home. As you can see in my picture, we didn't have enough money to go to the barber shop, so I got lopsided haircuts at home.
In spite of all this, our family barely scraped by. One day in particular is burned into my memory. I'll never forget the day my parents came to me and asked to borrow money from my piggy bank to buy milk & eggs. Can you imagine how much that hurt their pride??? Even having 4 jobs between them, they had to borrow money for food from a small child.
At the tender age of 7, and watching mom and dad constantly struggle to make ends meet, I made a promise to myself. I made a commitment that day, that I would learn everything I could about money and creating wealth so I could make it my life's work to help other people so they would never have to struggle like my parents.
I never forgot that promise, and it's what drives me to this day. It's my purpose in life, and my success as a businessman comes directly from helping 11,127 middle class families like mine go from flat broke to savings and wealth.
Make no mistake, I had my own money problems in my early years as I bounced around from job-to-job. I was literally a jack-of-all-trades. I was an MP in the Air Force, a Police Officer in the town of South Hampton, a bartender, truck driver, gas station attendant, and I even did lawn maintenance.
In 1992 I needed a change, and moved to sunny south Florida. This was a turning point in my life, as it was then I was introduced to investing, money management, and mortgage planning.
I had found my calling. I dove headfirst into studying everything I could get my hands on about finances, debt, and especially creating wealth.
I took to it like a fish takes to water. Soon I moved back to New York and with a small investment of $5,000 opened my own mortgage lending company. It rapidly grew from a small 2 person operation to a mortgage bank with over 42 offices and 950 employees nationwide!
INC. Magazine named my company, National Mortgage Bank one of the fastest growing companies in America. The Columbia Association named me Businessman of the Year, and the Long Island Business News named me one of the Top 40 Business People Under 40.
And as nice as all the honors and awards are, what warms my heart and motivates me every morning are the smiles and sincere thank you letters I get from the families I help go from debt, taxes, and worry to financial freedom. This is me living my purpose and keeping the promise I made as a 7 year old.
But, there was a dark side to having a fast growing nationwide company, and soon the 18 hour days and constant travel had wreaked havoc on my personal and family life.
Even worse, I discovered first hand how the big-wig bankers and credit card companies SCREW people over, and I wanted no part of it. I was sleeping with the enemy and I felt slimy and wanted out.
So I shut down the firm, locked the doors and walked away from it all. Honestly, I thought I would retire then and there, but I soon found out I couldn't sit still. Every time I picked up a paper or saw the news, there was yet another story on middle class America struggling with debt.
Everywhere I went I would listen, ask questions, and speak with my fellow New Yorkers. What I heard disturbed me. It seemed that more families than ever were getting squeezed with credit card debt, ballooning mortgages, high taxes, and shrinking pay checks.
Even worse, thousands of families had been screwed over by scum bag fly-by-night mortgage people, and are in danger of losing their house, foreclosure proceedings, and bankruptcy!
I GOT HOPPING MAD! I felt the fire burning in my belly, to once again come to the rescue of middle class homeowners, erasing their debts and freeing them from the financial slavery of the big-wig bankers.
